Workout Mash-up and Other Random Thoughts

Right now I'm feeling extremely under the weather. What started as a few sneezes on Monday has turned into a full on head cold that intensified Tuesday night and has only gotten worse. I have had a bad cold twice in the past 6 weeks and it is not fun, let me tell you. This time, I asked my doctor what I can take for it. She said Mucinex would be alright so I took some last night before bed. Now that it is wearing off, I'm back to feeling exactly how I did yesterday. Fun times, fun times. Thankfully, before things got to be too bad, I was able to get in a workout this week. (I'm hoping to feel better by the weekend to get in another run, but we'll see.)

On Tuesday I hit the treadmill with a goal of finishing 1-2 miles. After a mile, I wasn't really feeling it anymore so I headed to the elliptical and did a mile. I actually didn't hate the elliptical as much as I remember. In fact, I rather enjoyed the variety in this workout. Maybe because now things are different for my body. I move differently and my joints react differently. This pregnancy has really given me a new appreciation of what our bodies are capable of. It is quite remarkable.

And I don't think I'll be able to wear my "I Run with Fast Women" tee much longer. It was a bit tight in the abdomen/baby bump region! :) At 18 weeks, the bump is finally starting to emerge, just a tad bit. And I apologize for those that aren't familiar with me talking in "weeks." All the books and websites refer to pregnancy according to weeks. Once the baby is born, it seems like the books and websites refer to infants according to months. This is one of those things I'm learning along the way! A typical pregnancy lasts for 40 weeks and the 20 week mark is considered half-way. Since my due date is September 21st, I'm at about 4 months with 5 months left to go. Almost half way!

Weekly Cardio Summary 3/10-3/16

It is recommended to do at least 30 minutes of cardio a day when you are pregnant. I know a few of my fellow friends keep track of their weekly workouts and I think it is a great thing for me to start doing too! I think it will help me when that pregnancy brain kicks in and I can't remember what I did earlier today, let along last week.

Everyday: Walk to and from the train. 8 miles total.
0.8 miles each way. 2x per day, 5 days a week. I love my brisk walk from the train station to work every day. I used to hate it, but now I'm really starting to enjoy it.

Sunday: Rowing machine for 15 minutes
I haven't used the machine in awhile and it totally showed. I really enjoy the rowing machine because it works your arms and legs with very low impact. I watched the preview for the new season of Game of Thrones and I couldn't be more exited! New episodes start March 31!

She was so happy to be on that walk!
Until I got ice cream and she couldn't have any.
Sunday: 3 mile walk with Pepper
As I mentioned before, our pup needs to loose a few pounds so I've been taking her on a nice long walk every weekend. So far we're 2/2 and I hope to make it out this weekend too!

Wednesday: Running 1.5 miles on the treadmill
I am not going to post the pace of my workouts because to me, that is not important. I don't want to compare myself to other pregnant people or have other pregnant ladies compare themselves to me. I was just happy to run a few miles to get those endorphins going! Is my outfit obnoxious enough? I didn't think so either ;)

Anyone Fancy a Runch?

The other day on Twitter, a fellow blogger had asked for some tips on running during your lunch break. Since I am a huge fan of this activity, I thought I would share my tips with all of you!

1) Take your lunch hour later. On days when I plan to run, I will usually eat lunch at my desk and give it time to settle before heading out. I will usually take my "lunch" hour around 2pm or 3pm (my workday ends at 5pm). I think this just helps look a little gnarly for only a few hours of the afternoon instead of the entire afternoon.

2) Plan out your route ahead of time. If you work in the city, you know that GPS watches do not like the big buildings. That way, you'll still have a good idea of how far you've gone, even if your watch signal is a bit goofy. If you work in the suburbs, are there sidewalks the entire way on your route? Check these things out on your next drive in. I also recommend the "walk" feature on Google Maps. It notices pathways and such that are not accessible via car. (Not sure if this is common knowledge, as I only recently discovered it.)

About to head out for my planned route in the busy Chicago streets

3) Bring a few outfit options in case the weather has changed since your way to work. I hate being underprepared for a run! I won't let it stop me, but it can lead to some discomfort. (I may or may not have forgotten a sports bra on a Thursday night run. Your normal bra may "seem" fine, until you're actually moving. Oops!)

4) Pack your gym bag with a few extra items. I would say pack an extra pair of underwear or tank top (whatever you would wear under your work clothes) just in case you feel uncomfortable putting back on the same thing after a workout. It helps me to "feel" clean even if I only showered from the neck down. Fake it until you make it, right?

5) If your office doesn't have showers like mine does, I would recommend having some baby wipes or other clean wipes nearby to help with the "spot-check shower" you'll need to take. I would recommend having some sort of towel (or cotton tee) to help wipe the sweat of your brow. Extra deodorant (for before and after the workout) as well as some perfume (those free travel samples are perfect) can also help mask any leftover sweat smell that may be lingering.

6) Have some nice hair accessories in your gym bag or at your desk. Extra hair-ties, bobby pins, fancy headbands, etc. Or, a sockbun is a perfect after-workout hairdo if your hair is long enough. (Right now my hair is actually TOO LONG for a sock bun. Yikes.) It also helps to have some backup makeup in your gym bag or at your desk to reapply part of your face. I keep some in my purse

Before: hair in a ponytail, ready to run
After: bangs up in a poof and ponytail in a sockbun. Don't mind my red face

7) A little accountability always helps too. Try meeting up with a pal on your lunch break if you can. I know there's been talk of some CRBs meeting in the loop to run sometime. That would be a treat, for sure. I've even met up a fellow Oiselle team member for a lunch time run!

Do you run on your lunch break at work? If so, what are some tips that you can add to this list?
