13.1 Half Marathon Giveaway

Last year I wasn't able to run the 13.1 half marathon because I was volunteering for a Ragnar Relay team. This year, I'm also participating in Ragnar so I am unable to run the 13.1 for the 2nd year in a row. However, I've heard good things from my fellow runner friends and I really do hope that conditions are better than last year. (There's no way it can be THAT hot 2 years in a row, right?... RIGHT?)

Here is a little background about the race. This year, it takes place on Saturday, June 8th with a start time of 7am (nice and early for a June race). The course is along the lakefront path, starting and finishing at the South Shore Cultural center. So it at least gives a little bit of a different perspective of the lakefront path than usual.

Also, if you run the 13.1 and the Chicago Half Marathon, you'll complete the Windy City Challenge and receive an additional medal! (A full description of the Windy City Challenge is available on both websites.)

Why am I going on and on about the 13.1? Well, because I have been offered to give away one entry to the event to a lucky reader!

All you have to do to enter is leave me a comment mentioning a way you keep cool when running on a hot summer day.

Best of luck everyone! Who else is looking forward to some summer running?

FNRC on a hot summer night's run
The giveaway will be open for 1 week and entries will be taken until Wednesday, March 13 at 11:59pm CST. The winner will be announced on Thursday, March 14.

Running on the Wall Giveaway

A few weeks ago, I entered a giveaway through the Zooma blog for a race medal and bib display from Running on the Wall. I was super excited when I found out that I won! I was able to pick a bib and medal display to hang on my wall. When the medal display arrived, there was a mix up in communication and it was not the holder I had ordered. When they sent me a new one, Running on the Wall let me keep the original and I would like to give it away to one lucky reader! I have been saving this giveaway until after Christmas in case Santa didn't put one in your stocking.

The medal holder text reads "Runner Girl" and it comes with hooks to screw into the holes, to hang your medals. These hooks come in a separate bag.

To enter, (1) please leave a comment letting me know your favorite race medal. Mine is from the Grand Rapids Marathon.

For additional entries,
2) Like RunningKellometers on Facebook
3) Talk about the giveaway on Facebook, mentioning RunningKellometers
4) Follow RunningKellometers through Google (click "follow" on the right hand side of the blog)
5) Tweet about the giveaway, mentioning (@kellywils0n)

PLEASE summarize all entries in a single comment!

You have until Wednesday, January 9 at 11:59pm CST to enter. The winner will be chosen (using Random.org) on Thursday, January 10 by 10am CST. The winner must contact me within 72 hours (3 days) to claim their prize or another winner will be chosen (using random.org again). If you have any questions about the product or rules of the giveaway, please contact me before entering. This giveaway is open to all readers within the continental United States.

Haeleum Insect Repellent Clothing Review & Giveaway

In case you all haven't noticed, it has been a hot summer here in Chicago. It has been one of the hottest summers of my entire life actually (not an exaggeration). Now that fall is approaching and it is getting cooler, it seems that the mosquitoes are in full force out there. They are huge, brutal, and hungry. Being outside for only a few minutes can lead to several bites, let alone out on the trail. Even after my run a few days ago, I had 2-3 bites from standing around for 10 minutes in the dark.

When I saw an ad in Buzz Feed for a company that made insect repelling clothing (Haeleum), I was very interested. The "Insect Shield" technology aims to propel against mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, and all other types of nasty insects that cause a havoc to humans and their pets. It is also EPA approved and safe for use around infants as well. You can find out more information on the technology behind the product on Haeleum's website here. I contacted them to see if I could test out one of their products. They sent me a t-shirt to try out on one of our night runs out on the trail. This past Thursday, the temps were cool enough for sleeves and I gave it a try.

Oretta in Midnight
I had originally asked for a small but was told it was probably best to go up a size so I ordered the medium instead. It was a little too big but I think the small would have still been too small. Either way, I suggest going up a size if you're looking to purchase one of your own.

I wasn't sure what to expect before heading out on the run as it was kind of chilly and I wasn't sure how many bugs we'd actually see. After taking our group photo, we headed out onto the trail.

L to R: Me, Maggie, Kim, Amanda W, Jill, Bob, Kim and her daughter.
Front: Amanda C with Aby and Michael

Turns out the trail has a big gnat problem. There were swarms/clouds of gnats or whatever kind of bugs, and I was pretty much unaffected in my Haeleum shirt. My fellow runners were coughing/choking on bugs as I just smiled and may have squealed "It works!" Coming from someone who is pretty spastic when it comes to bugs, I was excited about my shirt. The run continued and we had some more bug problems and I continued to remain pretty unaffected compared to other runners. In the end, everyone was jealous of my shirt and wanted one of their own!

I had a few questions after the run about my shirt. How do you take care of this type of garment? Simple washing and drying does the trick (up to 70 washes), as long as you don't dry clean or spot clean for stains. I have hard water, and I specifically asked if the salt for the softener (or extra minerals) would change things and the answer was no. Hard water or regular water... effective up to 70 washes! Does it smell like bug spray? No! It just smelled like any other new dry-fit shirt and was nice and sweaty after my run (so it smelled like sweat.) With how hot this summer has been, I'm looking forward to wearing this tee to more training runs out in the woods.

With my shirt, they also sent me a bandanna/scarf that I'm going to giveaway to one lucky reader! Sorry Pepper, no new fashion accessories for you!

If you're uninterested in the bandanna and want a piece of the clothing yourself, there is a Gear Buzz code for 50% off (I'm not sure when it expires). Use the code: gearbuzz50 when checking out.
I held up my hand to help scale
And if you don't like to wear bandannas but have a dog or cat, you can totally put it on your pet as well! (I didn't test this out on Pepper in fear it would be somehow muddy in mere seconds.)

To enter: (1) leave me a comment telling me about the bug you fear the most... For me, that is spiders (especially the scary looking ones).

For additional entries,
2) Like RunningKellometers on Facebook
3) Like Haeleum on Facebook
4) Talk about the giveaway on Facebook, mentioning RunningKellometers
5) Follow RunningKellometers through Google (click "follow" on the right hand side of the blog)
6) Tweet about the giveaway (@kellywils0n)

PLEASE summarize all entries in a single comment!

You have until Monday, September 24 at 11:59pm CST to enter. The winner will be chosen (using Random.org) on Tuesday, September 25 by 10am CST. The winner must contact me within 72 hours (3 days) to claim their prize or another winner will be chosen (using random.org again). Zipfizz Giveaway

As some of you may know, I have a fairly sensitive stomach. I can't do Gu and, lately, haven't been able to do Gatorade either. The tablets have been my friend this summer and seem to be easier on my stomach. Now that I know I love them, I'm always interested to try new tablets. I went a little crazy at the Rock N Roll Expo and tried a bunch of different types of Nuun, Clif, and Zipfizz. The only one I ended up purchasing was  Zipfizz. After giving it a try, I really liked it! The folks at Zipfizz even sent me a sampler pack with 5 different flavors, including a special ZipFizz water bottle!

Not only is a great rehydrator after a few long nights when energy to study is necessary (um I may have had a glass after last weekend)... but it tastes great and can help you out during or after a run too!

It has sodium and caffeine (essential for long runs) while also having low sugar and a low calorie count. One packet is mixed with 16-22 oz of water and you're good to go. (All of this information was taken from their site here.) The flavors included were grape, citrus, orange soda, pink lemonade, and berry. I've tried the orange soda and pink lemonade (pictured above) and both were delicious!

Why am I telling you about Zipfizz? Because the folks have offered to send the same sample package they sent me to one of my readers! What do you have to do to enter?

1) Comment telling me your favorite way to hydrate after a long run

For additional entries, you can do any of the following:
2) Like RunningKellometers on Facebook
3) Talk about the giveaway on Facebook, mentioning RunningKellometers
4) Follow RunningKellometers through Google (click "follow" on the right hand side of the blog)
5) Tweet about the giveaway (@kellywils0n)

PLEASE summarize all entries in a single comment!

You have until Sunday, August 26 (by 11:59pm CST) to enter. The winner will be chosen (using Random.org) on Monday, August 27. The winner must contact me within 48 hours (2 days) to claim their prize or another winner will be chosen (using random.org again). If you have any other questions about the rules of the giveaway, please contact me before entering. This giveaway is open to all readers.

More Weather Frustrations

Last week I talked about how I wasn't going to post my whiny entry. Instead, I'm posting this whiny entry today. I hate hot weather. No matter how much I put myself out there and how hard I try, my workouts still suck. I am trying to get acclimated to the heat but it just hasn't been working. I'm getting out there when it's hot out. I'm not running to the treadmill when temps are in the 90s. When it is in the high 70s, why do I still struggle!? Why did I think it was a good idea to plan a goal half marathon to work my butt off for during one of the hottest Chicago summers on record? My goal race is only 6 days away. That means the forecast is out and things are not looking good. Highs in the low 90s. Ugh. (Hopefully that means it will be in the 60s at the start of the race and when we finish, temps will still be in the low 70s. A girl can dream, right?) This is the time when I'm supposed to be focusing on what I've worked towards over the past 12 weeks. I'm supposed to be visualizing myself achieving my goal and where I'll be throughout the course. There isn't time to panic/obsess about the weather. I think I just need to make sure I have a plan B, which is something I didn't have for the Chicago Marathon. Thankfully this race is only a half marathon and not a full. BUT, I've put in the work, I've put in the sweat, and I've even put in the tears. I'm hoping that the sub 1:50 is within my grasp come 7/22. I know that no matter what happens, I'm putting it all out there and giving it all I have...

Thanks to those of you that donated to my SpiBelt raffle. The winner is...

Lauren from Lauren Runs!

Thanks so much Lauren and congratulations! Please contact me at runningkellometers at gmail dot com to claim your loot!

In other news, I'm back in town from Mall of America where I scored some sweet new running gear with no sales tax. Winning! :) Also, in honor of the Olympics, I'll have a giveaway on the blog tomorrow so stay tuned!

SpiBelt Raffle

As my goal half marathon looms near, it is time for another raffle fundraiser! The folks at SpiBelt were generous to donate 2 products that I will be raffling off. In case you are unfamiliar with SpiBelt, it is a handy item-holder designed to fit your keys, cell phone, and/or energy (Gu, chews, etc.) during physical activity (running or biking, etc.) I know quite a few friends that swear by their SpiBelt and enjoy it especially when different shorts have different sized pockets. You never have to worry about transferring items from pair of shorts to pair of shorts--just keep what you need in your SpiBelt!

The winner of this raffle will win BOTH items. 1) The black running belt and 2) the pink and black spiband.

Are you curious how to enter this amazing raffle?

All you have to do is donate to my charity, Open Heart Magic by clicking HERE. For this raffle, every $3 donation = 1 entry. ($3 for 1, $6 for 2, etc.)

My First Giveaway

I know that there has been some blogger buzz around the 13.1 half marathon this year in Chicago. I haven't talked about it much because I won't be running the race this year. However, like many other bloggers, I'd like to offer a reader the change to enter into the 5k the day of the race (Saturday, June 9). In order to be entered into the giveaway, all you have to do is leave me a comment letting me know you are interested. I will choose the winner by Wednesday, June 6 at 9am CST as online registration has to be completed by June 6.

Partnering with the 13.1 event is the charity, Give Your Sole. Some information is below on the charity and how you can participate.

Details: · Allstate Life Insurance Company and non-profit organization Give Your Sole are giving half marathon runners the chance to leave a unique footprint on local communities as part of a shoe donation program around Allstate Life Insurance SM 13.1 Marathon® Series races.

· Beginning with the Chicago 13.1 Marathon on June 9, race participants, spectators and local residents can donate moderately used athletic shoes to benefit homeless shelters and missions in race markets. All shoes collected in Chicago will be donated to Breakthrough, an organization that provides shelter, meals and other services to homeless men, women and children within the city.

· In addition to the Finish Line Festival, race participants and local residents will be invited to donate shoes at 2012 race packet pick-up events leading up to the race. Participating Allstate® agents will assist with collecting donations by inviting customers to drop off shoes at their local agencies. In Chicago, donations will also be collected at participating Fleet Feet Sports store locations (N. Lincoln Ave. and N. Wells St. in Chicago, and at E. Schiller St. in Elmhurst) until June 10.

· To celebrate the program launch in their hometown of Chicago on June 9, Allstate Life Insurance Company has teamed up with Chicago Bears’ 2012 first-round draft pick Shea McClellin to interact with runners and encourage donations at the Allstate Life InsuranceSM Chicago 13.1 Marathon® Finish Line Festival, held at the South Shore Cultural Center.
I plan on donating a few pairs (that I won't be wearing to the Warrior Dash later this month). Have you donated shoes before? If so, was it part of a race or simply at your local Goodwill or donation center?

Oiselle Running Outfit Raffle

As I mentioned last week, I gave the Oiselle Lori Shorts a try and absolutely LOVED them. This week I have a great announcement! The folks at Oiselle have been kind enough to donate an outfit for me to raffle off!

The shirt is the Running Squared V-Neck. It is a size medium and the color pink. It is dryfit and very soft. (This shirt retails for $34 and can be found on Oiselle's website here.) If you're wondering about the sizing, a chart can be found here from Oiselle's website.

Close up

The shorts are Lori Shorts that I've tried and loved! They are also a size medium and the color green. (These shorts retail for $38 and can be found on Oiselle's website here.) Again, if you're wondering about the sizing, a chart can be found here from Oiselle's website. In my opinion, the shorts were true to size. I didn't feel they were too tight and had additional room, comfortably.

Look at the size of that inner pocket!

I am super jealous of the winner of this raffle. I mean, look at how fashionable you'd be in this jazzy outfit! :)

As you know from my previous raffles, all you have to do to enter the raffle, is donate to my charity, Open Heart Magic by clicking HERE. For this raffle, every $3 donation = 1 entry. ($3 for 1, $6 for 2, etc.)

Those that have donated to this raffle (or any previous raffle) can gain additional raffle entries if you:
1) like Running Kellometers on Facebook
2) blog about the raffle
3) tweet about the raffle (@kellywils0n)
If you do any of the items mentioned above, please leave a comment letting me know so I can be sure to include the additional entries! (If you have any questions please leave a comment or send me an email!)

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave me a comment or send me an email (runningkellometers at gmail dot com)!

Entries will be accepted until 9am (CST) on Monday, April 30 and the winner will be announced that same day. Best of luck! :)

Mizuno Wave Rider 15 Raffle!

I'm super duper excited to announce my next raffle!

For those of you that have seen me walking around town, you've probably noticed some new kicks on my feet. I've been sporting the Mizuno Wave Rider 15s that Mizuno sent me to test out!

They definitely stand out in a crowd and are super comfortable. The Wave Riders are in the Moderate/Neutral range.

What does this mean for you?!

The folks at Mizuno have donated a pair of the Mizuno Wave Rider 15 Limited Edition shoes for me to raffle off!

Here is a little bit about the Wave Rider (taken directly from Mizuno's website)

What makes Wave Rider 15 different?
By combining the best qualities of every Wave Rider that came before it, Mizuno has created its masterpiece with the Wave Rider 15. While the pendulum in running may swing from one extreme to another, the genius of the Wave Rider 15 is found through its harmonious balance of a lightweight feel, wrapped-to-foot fit and exquisitely smooth ride, ultimately producing a brilliant running experience.

And here is a video from Jason Lewis at Mizuno USA talking about the Wave Rider 15.

I guess the main question at this point is...
What do you have to do to win this sweet pair of kicks?

Just like all of my other raffles, donate to my charity, Open Heart Magic, by CLICKING HERE. Every $5 donation = 1 entry into the raffle. ($5 = 1 entry, $10 = 2 entries, $15 = 3 entries, etc.)

Entries will be accepted until 9am (CST) on Monday, April 2 and the winner will be announced that same day.

Best of luck to all those entering!
